Essentiële Chaplin
Deze driedelige documentaire van Brownlow en Gill is een MUST voor iedere Chaplin-liefhebber! Kort na de productie in 1983 zond de VPRO hem al uit met Nederlandse ondertitels en vertaald commentaar ingesproken door Cherry Duyns. Maar in deze originele versie kunnen we genieten van de stem van Hollywood veteraan acteur James Mason, die in het daaropvolgende jaar overleed. De film sloeg toen in als een bom, niet in de laatste plaats door de lange en inmiddels beroemde scene waar 'the little man' voor een mode-etalage worstelt met een stukje hout, dat hij tevergeefs probeert achteloos tussen de spijlen een luchtrooster door te trappen. Alleen al deze scene, gedraaid voor City Lights, maar niet in de uiteindelijke film terecht gekomen -waarschijnlijk omdat hij teveel afleidde van de verhaallijn- is een meesterwerkje op zich en de aanschaf van de hele dvd dubbel en dwars waard. Maar er zijn nog veel meer tot dan toe onbekende fragmenten te zien -rushes, out-takes en zelfs volledige films, alle ontsnapt aan de door Chaplin bevolen verbranding; onthullende interviews met zijn leading ladies op leeftijd en amateurfilmpjes op de set en thuis. De technische kwaliteit is gezien de ouderdom van het materiaal zo goed als mogelijk. Verder geeft de documentaire een prachtig inzicht in Chaplins carriere, persoonlijkheid en vooral zijn merkwaardige oneconomische maar creatief-effectieve improviserende werkwijze, die de medewerkenden vaak tot waanzin dreef, maar uiteindelijk leidde tot de meesterwerken die we nu kennen. De extra's zijn interessante "Making of"-fragmenten en een koddige ontmoeting met de vooral in Groot Brittannië beroemde collega-komiek Harry Lauder. Een minstens zo boeiende MUST is overigens de DVD "Buster Keaton - A Hard Act to Follow" van dezelfde makers (in Nederland ook ondertiteld uitgebracht als drie Dvd-set onder de titel "Het leven en werk van Buster Keaton")
