The film is based of the 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess of the same name. The film pushed the boundaries as it was the first of it's kind to depict murder and violence as common hobbies performed by youth subcultures. The film was banned in several countries like Singapore, Ireland and South Africa due to its sensitive themes which were deemed as too vulgar and brutal for international audiences. Although the film was banned, it was still nominated for the Academy Award for best director, best picture and best adapted screenplay, none of which it won.
