Dirk Bogarde plays the wide-eyed, innocent medical student, Simon Sparrow, who arrives at St. Swithins Hospital. He falls in with a crowd of students who are all senior to him but have been kept down in the first year, including lecherous Donald Sinden, rugby playing Donald Houston and congenitally lazy Kenneth More.
