This offbeat comedy series follows the on-again, off-again romance of a totally mismatched pair, Brenda Wilson (Emma Wray - True Love, My Wonderful Life) and Malcolm Stoneway (Paul Bown - Diamond Geezer, Planespotting). The path of true love is far from smooth and there are tears and break-ups, rows and reconciliations galore, but there is also an inexplicable attraction which brings them back together after every stormy parting. This top-rated comedy also stars Liza Tarbuck (The Hound of the Baskervilles, Bleak House) and Patsy Byrne (Blackadder, David Copperfield).
Meeting
Brenda and Pamela Wilson are sisters who spend a lot of time playing a game called 'people-watching'. Whilst in their local pub, The Grapes, they spot a 'newey' called Malcolm and Brenda arranges to spend a day out with him. Supervised and disappointed that he is a bird-watcher and not a biker she soon finds herself on a day out at Burton Marsh!
Wrestling
Malcolm tells his colleague in the shop where he works about the day out with Brenda. Whilst at lunch, Brenda leaves a note with Mr. Ambrose asking Malcolm to meet her in The Grapes. With more 'people-watching' being the activity of the day in the pub, it is not before Brenda has persuaded Malcolm to take her for an Indian meal.
Outing
Terry is curious about Malcolm's date with Brenda. Pretending to be a customer, Brenda calls into the shop to arrange another date but with Malcolm's mother, Mrs. Stoneway, also making arrangements it looks as though his day off work will have to be a combined affair!
Confusing
Terry Milton offers to help Malcolm out with his relationship and he arranges to meet Brenda in The Grapes. However, a case of mistaken identity results in Pamela threatening to throw Brenda out of her flat.
Leaving
Pamela and Brenda are on bad terms and she has asked Brenda to find somewhere else to live. Brenda decides to reform her character and agrees to accompany Malcolm to a motor museum on his day off. With her heart set on living in London Brenda gets on the train but has second thoughts and gets off at Crewe.
Repenting
Pamela repents and allows Brenda to return to the flat. With compassionate thoughts in her head, Brenda has ideas about making Pamela feel more appreciated by her boss and lover Sidney Clough. A surprise party is arranged but will everything work out as expected?
Hiding
Malcolm injures his back birdwatching with Brenda. After six weeks convalescing he calls in at The Grapes to see Brenda and it's time to confess - they certainly have missed each other!
Seasoning (Christmas Special)
Brenda, Pamela and Malcolm set out to get a Christmas tree, but with Mrs. Stoneway insisting that Malcolm spend Christmas at home Brenda decides to have a 'pretend' Christmas Day at the flat. But with presents exchanging hands and love in the air they get an unexpected visitor - and it isn't Father Christmas!
