Over 130,000 Australian horses served in the 1914-1918 war. None came home. This is their story. Known as Walers, they were a special kind of horse as they could withstand great heat, travel great distances and perform great feats in battle. They served their Light Horsemen most significantly in the Desert War . Across the inhospitable terrain of the Middle East, they carried the first of the victorious Allied forces into Damascus in 1918.
