Een bijzondere z/w tragi-comedy uit 1941. De twee hoofrolspelers zijn goed op dreef in hun rol. Het tempo van de film is vrij hoog. Een hectische achtervolging in de film vormt een hoogtepunt. Op hun tocht, om te ervaren hoe de "onderkant" van de maatschappij het vergaat, wordt het zeer schrille contrast tussen het mooie Beverly Hills en Hollywood en de achterbuurten wel heel duidelijk op zwart wit gezet. De film handelt ook over moraliteit, status en goed en slecht. In het laatste gedeelte van de film, voorafgegaan door enkele dramatische momenten, besluit John Sullivan geen sociaal maatschappelijk georiënteerde film te regisseren maar kiest hij voor een simpeler alternatief, nl. het maken van een comedy-film.
