Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time. As a result he encounters some surprises from his past history including Classic Sonic, Sonic as he appeared in 1991. Sonic Generations is probably the best Sonic game I've played in years. It covers 9 popular stages from previous Sonic games; 3 from the Mega Drive, 3 from the Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube era and 3 from the current consoles (XBox360,PS3,Wii). What it does cleverly is that it combines classic sidescrolling gameplay with modern 3D gameplay. The modern gameplay still suffers the "unfair" factor, which is often seen as the weak point of Modern Sonic games, but after some practicing everything is reasonably doable. What makes it shine is a combination of factors: it's fast, beautifully detailed and it has tons of challenges with plenty of cool collectibles as prizes, like classic soundtracks and image stills. If you have a 3D TV, you can even play it in stereoscopic 3D. It's very nice to see the game perform fluently in 3D mode. I won't award it 5 stars, because it has its flaws, but I think for everyone who loved the old games, it's a must-have game. And at Zavvi it's now so cheap that you won't have to save up for it first ;-)
