The Vauxhall Team of James Thompson and Yvan Muller returned to the grid in 2004 in confident mood. And there were certainly no team orders for either driver to give way. The epic season-long battle between the two went right down to the final race of the season at Donington Park, proving that there is no love lost between team-mates. Thompson took the championship by a single point, which he secured by setting the fastest lap time in the race. This gave Vauxhall and its VX Racing Team the Manufacturer and Team titles for a record fourth year in a row, making the Vauxhall Astra Coupe the most successful car in BTCC history.
In true fashion, the panel-bashing action wasn't confined to the top of the table. Finishing fourth overall, Anthony Reid used his experience to become the Harrier Zeuros Independents Champion in his MG.
