This moving WW2 drama deservedly won the 1958 Cannes Palme d'Or and reintroduced Soviet cinema to the outside world as well as being a huge domestic box office hit. The film looks at the impact of the war on the participants: the lovers who fail to say their farewells prior to Boris's departure through unfortunate circumstances; his surgeon father who has to continue caring for his patients and the shifty cousin trying to avoid the conflict altogether.

Beautiful.
This one is a must see and already a rare OOP DVD release on the mighty Artificial Eye flm label who also brought us must have classics by Tarkovsky, Mizoguchi & Bergman amongst others. It is a heartbreaking story about a Russian couple who are madly in love but get seperated because the second world war breaks out and the man volunteers for the army. Her long wait for his return tears her heart apart. I do not reveal the plot here so you really should see this classic Russian movie which is the only one to win the Palme d'Or in 1958. The Cranes Are Flying will cut the strings of your heart. Highest possible recommendation.
