EEN CRIMINELE OPERATIE MET MILITAIRE PRECISIE...
Een Engelse comedy-thriller die alweer de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd nadert, maar die dankzij z'n vrij hoge tempo nog altijd onderhoudend is: in de eerste helft leren we de interessante personages en de plannen van de kolonel kennen, daarna neemt de vaart ietwat af door een min of meer komisch bezoek aan een legerbasis, maar de film eindigt weer in stijl met de climax van de roof en de nasleep. Voor de moderne kijker zal in de cast vooral Richard Attenborough opvallen, later de regisseur van "Gandhi" en de wetenschapper in "Jurassic Park", en andere belangrijke rollen zijn weggelegd voor Jack Hawkins als de kolonel en Bryan Forbes (tevens de scriptschrijver) als de gladde versierder die zich door een oudere vrouw laat onderhouden terwijl hij het met een jongere vrouw aanlegt (en dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over zijn wèttelijke vrouw). Al met al is deze film een delicatesse voor wie kan genieten van de iets oudere maar qua setting en gedrag nog opmerkelijk realistische en sobere cinema, maar ook jongere kijkers zal hij nog kunnen verrassen. Wat de technische aspecten betreft, het zwart-wit-beeld is acceptabel, hoewel niet geremasterd; opgemerkt moet worden dat de beeldverhouding van de oorspronkelijke release 1:1.66 was, terwijl de film in de verhouding 1:1.85 op de DVD staat, hetgeen betekent dat er iets aan het beeld gesleuteld moet zijn, vermoedelijk in de vorm van minimale stroken die aan de onder- en/of bovenkant afgesneden zijn om de film optimaal geschikt te maken voor onze moderne 1:1.85-televisieschermen; heel bezwaarlijk is deze ingreep echter niet, want de kadrering blijft overal precies en het beeld blijft scherp. Vervelender voor de Nederlandse kijker is dat de film in het geheel niet ondertiteld is, hoewel de dialogen gelukkig wel goed verstaanbaar zijn. Als voornaamste extra's bevat deze uitgave verder een commentaartrack van scriptschrijver/acteur Bryan Forbes en zijn vrouw, de actrice Nanette Newman, alsmede het script in PDF-formaat (alleen te benaderen via een PC of laptop) en een 70 minuten lange televisie-uitzending van de Engelse South Bank Show uit 1992, gewijd aan de carrière van Richard Attenborough. Vanwege de kwaliteit van de film èn de behoorlijke extra's mag deze DVD aldus wel een aanrader heten.
